The complexity of Los Angeles County's school district map directly impacts the type of educational data that is available and unavailable. Because school districts do not necessarily align with the city boundaries in LA County (there are 88 cities for 93 school districts), many students live in one city but attend school in a different school district. This complexity makes tracking student progress and success more difficult than it would be in a unified system. Geographical and demographic nuances create a data ecosystem in Los Angeles that does not allow for a single data system to track students as they move through the school system.
Other major educational data gaps include data on foster youth academic success and metrics on social emotional learning. The latter is difficult to obtain and not widely available statewide in California. This is of special concern in Los Angeles County because it provides social services to one of the nation’s largest populations of foster youth. This data is essential to understanding the overall, long term success and welfare of students across LA County.
